Too true. After recently help build a TV trailer and putting in a 
kilzillion cable ties,
I use a small pair of diagonal cutters perpendicular to the tie tail 
(i.e. slice edge to edge with the flat side of the dikes up.)
 Leaves a cut that won't scratch the hide off. (sort of rounded.)
