heathkit AT-1 keying

I have had 5 or 6 AT1s over the past 50 years.  They all sounded terrible with oscillator keying no matter what I tried.  I use mine now in the classic exchange contest (paired with a 75A4!) with a VF1.  To use my boatanchors, I built a "universal auxilliary unit" that combines a hefty antenna relay, a dpdt relay, 100KC calibrator, keyer, and SWR bridge. There is a TR switch on the panel and a TR footswitch.  Either one activates both relays. I have terminal strips on the back connected to both poles of the relay.  Typically I use one pole to mute the receiver on transmit.  I ran a wire to the VF1 standby pole that turns the VFO on when relay is in transmit position, and turns it off on receive.  The switch on the VF1 stays in standby, much as a receiver standby switch when remotely operated.  The VFO on position can be used for spotting.  This way, the oscillator runs when transmitting, and in standby when receiving, without throwing any
 switches.  Of course, break in is not possible with this setup, but I find footswitches very convenient.  My little unit makes activating a variety of boat anchors easy and quick.

The AT1 still sounds terrible, but not quite as bad as oscillator keying!  Using a separate power supply for the VF1 helps, too!
