Grid dip meter GD-1B Query

The total length of the metal in the 100 MHz to 250 MHz coil for the Heath GD-1, GD-1A, and GD-1B is 2.25 inches.  Now 0.25 inches on each end is "turned down" to fit the socket.  The wire appears to be 8 gauge wire.  At least in the case of my GD-1B hairpin coil I have compared the size of the metal with 8 gauge wire and they appear to be identical.
