ISTR another method was to hook them up to 120/230 VAC and run them to
clean the contacts.

You could also use a diamond file (some dollar stores have these as
nail files!) and merely 'breathe' it over the contacts - NO PRESSURE!

I'd avoid emery cloth etc. unless you REALLY know what you are doing.

BTW, to replace a synchronous vibrator with a non-synchronous model or
solid state unit, just add a couple of IN4004 diodes on the high side.
