CB radio antennae question?

Hello Group,
I picked up an old Heathkit 23 channel CB base station.
It has a RCA type input for the transmit antennae and
screw terminals for the receive.
Question: What type of antennae do I use for the receive?
Can I make my own? What is the wave length and element length?
I got an adapter for the xmit to go from rca to PL259. How far away does the
xmit antennae have to be from the unit?
I just want to verify that the radio works, it will go on the shelf with my other Heathkit
items.
I am neophyte in Ham Radio, I picked this up to add to my Heathkit collection.
Thank you
Mike M
