This sounds like a problem we used to have (WBW) with Russian 811A's. 
You had to operate them either in a vertical position, base down, or
horizontally with the filament in the vertical plane.  Otherwise the
filament would sag and  -ZAP-  you needed a new tube.  Was there any
precautionary note in the packaging of those Chinese tubes?
