Do you have the connection between the Anti-VOX on the SB-303 and SB-401 made? Do you have the connection between the Speaker on the SB-303 and the Rcvr Audio made? If so, remove these connections and connect the speaker directly to the SB-303. This will eliminate any audio connections between the transmitter and receiver. These connections are only helpful if using VOX operation with a fairly "loud" setting for the receiver audio.
Frankly, I do not like VOX operation and use PTT when I am using my SB-401/SB-301 combination. I did modify my SB-401 to parallel the PTT function from the microphone jack on the front panel to one of the "spare" RCA jacks on the rear of the transmitter and then use a foot pedal for PTT operation. I also use the Phone Patch input on the rear panel of the SB-401 for the microphone audio. Using these 2 RCA jacks do away with the need to have the microphone plugged into the front panel and thus keep the area in front of the transmitter uncluttered.
In fact, I use the rear connections for the microphone audio and PTT on all of my transmitters if there are such connections on the rear. This keeps the area in front of the equipment free for other things. See
