So that I do not bore anyone with another lengthy troubleshooting
history, I will make it short.
Halleluiah ! It works great on all bands, 80M-15M 90W out, 10M 70-80W,
no trouble tuning whatever. The last three persistant troubles were
solved as follows:
1. The chattering relays and flaky tuning were solved 100% by
resoldering all connections in the finals, top and bottom. The
intermittents with tapping the tubes was corrected by using a dental
pick tool on every pin contact from the top, pressing the contacts
closer together.
2. The poor loading on all 10M bands was corrected by removing the
coil cover and adding clips (the ones with holes for screws) over the
coil shields. Then I etched every contacting surface of the cover with
a scribe and applied KOPR-SHIELD compound to the mating surfaces
(including the added clips), wiping off the excess and puting the
cover back on.
3. The BIAS trouble was fixed by replacing the bias dropping resistor
R302 3.3K with a 3.9K to get the voltage back in line. After hitting
my head against the wall so many times over this, I think I finally
broke loose some of those brain cells and realized that the resting
voltage was too high. Now the RX/TX bias on the finals is -64V/-61V,
close to spec.
Thanks for so many great ideas from all the list members, which not
only helped me to diagnose the problems but also to re-train myself in
the theory of this fine radio. I am proud to know you all. Any
request for more detail are welcomed and will be answered.
Thanks and 73, Dick KF4NS
