try this out - built this some years ago, works great, except I used
a function generator for the pulses and not the transformers.

Subject: [Heath] Transistor tester/analyzer
Gents:
I am investigating the purchase of a good transistor tester or analyzer.
I don't think I need a curve-tracer, but simply one which will test and
adequately match transistors up through the TO-220 sized RF power
types.
Can anyone here recommend such, or point me towards details of one I
could build?
I really don't have room for one of those Tektronix 545-sized curve
tracers.
