This what I expected: the voltage drop across Si is "about" 0.6 volts, while 
that for Ge is "about" 0.3 volts. 

0.3 volts is "about" 0.2 volts less than the lowest output voltage of "about" 
0.5 V. I had guessed that the lowest output voltage, with the components 
unchanged, would be about 1.0 V.
