I broke the dial string for my HW100 load capacitor mod I did some time ago. Does anyone have a late
HW101 manual with the instructions on page 89 for installing the dial cord and spring? My copy is pretty
blurred. I am pretty sure that it is from the late 101 but could be one of the SB series, not sure.
I managed to get the dial cord loops tied and attached to the spring so far. The problem I now face is
locating the pulleys on the shafts. It seemed pretty simple at first but now I am questioning myself on
the position of the load cap plates, meshed or not. The tuning arm when turning clockwise is supposed to
"INCREASE LOAD" so does that mean higher capacitance or lower capacitance?
I tried to turn the pulley notch of the load cap to the 9 o'clock position as shown in the instruction
and with the plates meshed but no way to get a screwdriver on the set- screw since it faces the side
rail. See what I mean about meshed or not and high or low capacitance to start with. Very confusing, I
know. If you have not tried it you have no way of visualizing this thing. Heath did a lousy job of
instructing the builder.
You might ask why I am not using the original HW100 configuration with an O-ring. My load cap has seen
hours of me trying to free it up from the stiff condition using every idea ever described. My rotten
luck, a tight one. It is not the dried grease in the bearings, they are cleaned out and a medium weight
lube applied. It would be too much work to replace the vari-cap so the dial string is best for me. Will
give my phone number to anyone who would rather talk P - P.
