Hello, gang,
Well, I've been working on fixing up a Marauder for some weeks now, and I've
made some serious progress.
First of all, I decided to rebuild all the PS stages. I have 150uF/500V caps
in the HV section with new equalizer resistors, and a 25k 25W chassis-mount
Dale resistor replacing the old wirewound Ohmite which had gone up to 45k.
There's also a new 40-40uF/500V cap next to the two HV caps. In the LV
section, I have two new 47uF/450V axials and also replaced several
out-of-tolerance resistors. Put new 600V/1A diodes in place of the
500V/500mA ones.
In the VOX circuitry, there were several resistors around V9B which were way
off, making the PTT flaky. Replacing them was somewhat akin to doing brain
surgery. Now I have solid PTT action. I hardly ever use VOX, but the PTT
line goes right through there, so it had to be set right.
I spent a lot of time cleaning up the dial and VFO drives and making sure
that the end stops would work properly. They do now. And, I just finished
calibrating the VFO which is now smack on with 4900kHz at the top dial mark
and 5500kHz at the bottom mark. And, thank goodness, it's right on halfway
up the dial; I checked that last.
I'm going to go through setting the heterodyne oscillator coils too.
Now, all I need to do is go through the steps with the HV 5R4 in place. The
previous HV reading was about 625V so you KNOW that one of the old filter
caps was leaking like a sieve (and the fuses blew, too). Ran otherwise OK
with the 5R4 out of the socket before.
So, we're making progress albeit slowly. I'd welcome any other tips you
could think of.
