Hi, folks,
Well, maybe I've spoken too soon. I had success this morning getting the
heterodyne mixer and driver coils peaked, and making sure the heterodyne
oscillator coils were set right.
Next was to put in the 5R4 and see if I got any power out. Nasty surprise. I
peaked the drive and used the Final Tune to max about 50W on my Waters dummy
load/wattmeter, at 14,250 per the manual. Seemed all right, BUT the dial
lamps dimmed when keyed (NOT good) and, worse yet, the plate current
position on the multimeter maxes with no dip indication. Also, on keying,
the HV drops considerably. Considering I have brand-new filter caps in
there, something's way wrong. At least the fuses didn't blow and no smoke
came out.
Must have a wiring problem in the metering and I'm going to check the wiring
for the two new filter caps. I'll bet I need to use heavier wire from the HV
terminal strip to the first cap + and the first cap - to the second cap +. I
used some Teflon insulated hookup wire there, and I'll bet it's too thin.
Back to the bench...
