Actually, Ray, Heath engineers didn't dream that one up: it had been used for 
vernier dials since the late 1920s.

But you're right: there certainly are better, more modern, and more reliable 
methods.

I also find that thing to be a big PITA, but at least when it works, there is no 
backlash.
