I have had some success with a silicon tap grease which holds the core and  
does not appear to have any effect on the inductor Q. I never use rubber 
banding  as it significantly increases the risk of jamming - might be better 
with a  lubricating grease.
 
When I worked as a designer in the mobile radio industry we used a  
thixotropic silicon grease from Rocol which held cores very well. It needed  gentle 
pressure to get the core moving for adjustment and would then set in  
position again when left undisturbed.
 
Most cores break due to the use of a trimming tool that is of an incorrect  
shape. Anything with a diagonal shape risks breaking the core. Ideally the  
trimming tool should have sides that are parallel to the aperture in the  
core and be a snug fit in the core to minimise single contact point  stresses.

In years past, one could buy replacement slugs for the  Heathkit.  I need 
several to restore a friend's HW-101.  I know I  can buy complete boards and 
that is what I may have to do but in the interim,  are the slugs available?  
I also know that cracked slugs will have to be  drilled out.  What can be 
used for a lubricant for the replacement  slugs?  I also think I recall 
someone suggesting using a think rubber  band or dial cord when starting the 
replacement slug into the hole to keep the  slug from slipping. 
What am I missing?
