Here is a method that worked with an analog/beefy Tektronix scope from NY to Oregon...and back!

Front face including all dials and knobs were protected with a thick ( 1" or better) piece of construction foam, taped lightly just to hold it in place.( or, any other material with some rigidity as opposed to foam rubber for front panel protection.

Next...bubble wrap. I used wrap with smaller bubbles and LOT'S of it! Wrap around and around and around... etc. from front to back, than, side to side. When wrapping, if you extend the bubble wrap beyond either side or edge by a couple/three inches, when done wrapping you will have material extended to protect the corners.

Finally, line a strong box with construction foam until there is at least Two inches of protection completely around the device / on all sides.

Seal with clear shipping tape, Post Office does not advocate the use duck tape.

Good Luck!

Double box, for starters!
If you
really want to go nuts, If it were me, I'd contact that guy that
supplies ham
equipment boxes.
Then it will also be shipped back in that
box.

Shipping can be a royal patooee, that is for
sure.? I would, of course, start off with a separate box for each radio. I pull
the case off and remove the feet entirely, put the feet in a ziplock bag and
tuck the bag inside the radio. I add some loose crumpled paper inside the radio
to keep things from moving around and then slip the radio back in the case and
put a screw or two to hold things together. I then cut some sheet material (
such as foam rubber, styrofoam, etc) to fit the front and back panels (cut outs
for knobs, dials, connectors, etc) on the front and back - maybe with a layer of
cardboard around everything. And then wrap the whole deal in a couple of layers
of bubble wrap.? Then tuck the bundle inside the box, seal it up and ship it.?
And cross my fingers.?
No wonder I hate shipping big items!? You have to keep
the item you are shipping well protected and you have to insure that shipping
shocks (e.g. dropping the package from 6 ft in the air) will not cause damage!

Heavy items can be a real problem to ship.? I once made the horrible
mistake of shipping a HV choke with ceramic insulators in a box that just didn't
have enough space between the choke and 'world' - the box got dropped and the
choke 'punched' it's way through the bottom and one of the insulators broke.? It
was not the loss of money that was the worse part - it was the broken
part!

If you can find a shipping outfit that uses injected foam then that
would be ideal.? You should insure that the stuff inside the radio is secure and
then they would wrap the radio in plastic, put the radio in a box and inject
expanding foam to fill up all the voids.? The shipping department at my old
company (Honeywell Aerospace) used that for their shipping and it worked the
treat.? Ron Oxley may also be able to offer some hints and ideas.
The SB line
are fairly light and not horrible to ship.

 Hi all,

- I just am
too busy these days and I want them to work just right.

Can
anyone recommend any 'special methods' of packing suited to radios?? I
don't
want the main spinner knob to be pushed in during transit or anything
(just an
example), and I don't want the aluminum coverings to get dented,
etc.? Someone
said I should remove the front riser feet and just put on
short feet, for
example.

Anyway . other ideas?? I am not looking to skimp
either.
