My experience is the same as yours, Guy: my Heathkits are the most reliable gear I 
use....except my military gear... :-)

And I also have and use Kenwood, Yaesu, Icom. No Drake or Collins yet though.

The mil gear, when used as it was meant to be used, is very reliable.
