Well sometimes you just have to admit you are getting old and maybe 
don't see to well. Had the 28.5 and 29 MHz crystals reversed in the 
socket. Placing them in the correct socket resolved the preselector 
peaking issue. The hold down clips make it hard to remove the crystals. 
I do hear beacon signals on the 28 MHz band, so it may not be far from 
specs as far as 10 Meters is concerned.
