Guys,You are continuing the confusion.  SSB does not imply no carrier, but the term has been used for decades so everyone believes it means no carrier.
Dale, if you look at the transmit signal with a simple scope you will not be able to tell if the carrier is absent. You will see an RF signal with audio impressed on it. If you look at the signal with spectrum analyzer or any scope capable of displaying in the frequency domain, then you will see the absence of a carrier and the sideband.
Mike, I agree that one sideband (with or without carrier) is more efficient than full AM DSB with carrier.  However, SSB with no carrier (SSBSC) still needs to have a carrier reinjected at the receiver to demodulate the audio.
Howie, certain transmitters can have carrier and opposite sideband when close to the transmitter.  This more depends on the method used to generate the sideband and how effective the shielding and filtering of the transmitter has been implemented.  In a balanced modulator where the output then passes through a bandpass filter, the opposite sideband and any carrier is at a very low level and generally at the i.f. frequency of the radio.  It was quite common for old radios to use a first i.f. of around 3.5 MHz.  That was due to the tried and true designs of the day and the ability to maintain stability and obtain common parts like crystal and mechanical filters. So yes, a 75M receiver would hear both sidebands and carrier if tuned to the i.f. frequency of the transmitter using a VFO around 3.5 MHz.
While I don't hold Wikipedia as a fully credible source, the article on SSB does have a nice discussion outlining reduced carrier, suppressed carrier and no carrier with reference to sideband communications.  Please be aware that SSB modulation was first patented in 1915 and used by the Navy for experimentation shortly after that.  Hams really started using SSBSC after WWII but it became big in the 50's.

NO.. SSB is single sideband .  That's all.. nothing more nothing less.

All modulation, no carrier.

Look at the tx signal with a scope.

Al...

You say "SSB is one sideband with carrier.  Only one sideband is needed for audio demodulation.  This mode also reduces input power"

SSB is one sideband WITH CARRIER...Huh?

So it would appear "SSB is one side band with a carrier" was a typo....

Not really true. The carrier (and unwanted side band) are suppressed (a lot), but not eliminated. The carrier especially can be heard at very close range. Suppression is listed on most transmitter spec sheets.
