[Heath] Marauder dial window

Hi Ron,

Thanks for your reply. I studied the Pictorial diagram for the dial window and dial scale/brackets/gears/etc. . The dial window escutcheon is held in place by at least two screws that are inserted through the panel from inside the rig. The only way I can see to get at those screws is by removing the dial scale, associated brackets, and tuning gears. Your experience with getting the dial window out and replaced sounds like magic 😊. Wish you could remember a bit more. I’d love to know if there was an easier solution and the specific “here’s how to do it”.

That tuning mechanism is something to behold and fear. Reading the steps in the assembly manual made me sea-sick but many of our brothers seemed to get the dang thing assembled and working….so there’s hope.

Wonder how your friend is doing with the Marauder?

Anyway, thanks again!

Chris

If my somewhat unreliable memory serves, when I got a Marauder maybe 15 years ago, the dial window was cracked as well. I know I didn’t disassemble it, but think it was just glued. Somehow I got the old window out and just glued in another. There was a place around here that dealt in plastics, and they cut me another one and I glued it in.

I used it on and off for years, then a couple of years ago something happened to the very complex dial mechanism, and I could never fix it, even with the help of more talented friends. Just a few weeks ago, someone was visiting and saw the Marauder, fell in love with it, and I sold it to him cheap, after telling him what the problem was. Off it went, manual and all, and a box of parts that were taken off.

As I say, sometimes I’m a bit “milky in the filbert,” but I’m pretty sure that’s what happened!

Good Luck

Ron K2RP

Hello out there in Heathkit land,

I pulled my Marauder off the shelf today to dust it off and noticed that the dial window that’s behind the escutcheon is cracked.

Opened up the top cover to get a look at the backside and, of course, the dial window is hidden by the dial scale, associated brackets, and tuning gears. What really gave me the chills was that it looked like the entire tuning mechanism (see assembly manual pgs 98-100) would have be disassembled in order to get at the escutcheon and dial window.. Once at the point where the dial window can be seen, the pictorial pic of the dial window doesn’t show any attaching hardware to hold it to the escutcheon…. looks like the window may be firmly affixed to the escutcheon – as in glued ??!!

Please tell me I’m way off base. Better yet, tell me there’s a much simpler procedure. 😊

Since there isn’t much about Heathkits that Glen, Ken, Wilson, Howard, and fellow readers don’t know, I’m hoping that one (or more) of you have some suggestions regarding material(s), source(s), and removal tips.

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Chris
