Unless you have a rather unusual network topology, you *really* want
to have a loopback interface for each router. If gives you a unique
identification for each router, and an interface which is always up,
independent of possible link flaps etc. For one thing, it is needed
for IBGP.

(Okay, not *strictly* necessary, but definitely best practice...)
