No, arbitary manipulation of the AS path COULD break bgp's loop
detection mechanism, if used incorrectly (but so could a lot of things).
That's why I said make it hidden, so the average idiot won't come along
and screw themselves. Unfortunately there are some times when you just
NEED to do it, and running things through a custom BGP implementation
isn't always easy when you can't do ebgp-multihop for political reasons.
Note that I don't consider the OP's situation to be a legitimate
application for it, I want it for my own reasons. :)
