We tried replacing the 4GB CF with a 2GB CF are experiencing the same
problem - it wont boot off the CF. The 256MB CF that came with the RE works
perfectly fine though. We are going to try the SanDisk 1GB CFs next
(SDCFB-1024-A10),
these have worked fine for me in J Series routers.
show system boot-messages | match "ad0|ad1"

machdep.bootdevs: pcmcia-flash,pcmcia-flash-1,compact-flash,disk,lan
