Network Services Department Profile:

Network Services mission includes designing, procuring, installing,
monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintaining high performance wired and
wireless networks for voice, video, and data. Network Services resolves
access and connectivity issues and ensures networks are reliable, resilient,
secure, and capable of supporting an ever expanding set of applications for
achieving the educational, research, and community outreach objectives
defined by our clients.  

Job Summary

Under direction from the UTS Director of Network Services install,
configure, test, and troubleshoot wired and wireless networking equipment
and cabling infrastructure for local-area-networks (LANs) and
wide-area-networks (WANs). Network equipment includes, as a minimum,
Ethernet switches, routers, and wireless access points. Cabling duties
include, but are not limited to, code-compliant installation, testing and
documentation of standards-based, structured cabling systems based on high
performance twisted pair copper (Cat5, Cat6, etc.), coaxial video cables,
and single-mode and multimode fiber optic cables.  

Preferred Qualifications

-Formal training and/or experience & knowledge working with Cisco Operating
Systems for switches and routers (IOS & Catalyst).

-Formal training and/or experience & knowledge of ISP & OSP cabling
standards and building codes (installation & testing of Cat 5/6, coax, and
fiber optics media).

-Hands-on experience installing, configuring, and troubleshooting Cisco
networking equipment (switches, routers, etc.).

-Wireless network experience with Proxim "access points".

-Hands-on installation, termination & testing of ISP & OSP standards-based,
structured cabling systems (Cat 5/6, coax, and fiber optics).

-Thorough knowledge of TIA/EIA structured cabling systems & wiring patterns.

-Hands-on experience using fiber optic fusion splicers (especially Fujikura
& Siecor fusion splicers).

-Hands-on experience using an OTDR (testing, documenting & troubleshooting).

-Hands-on experience testing fiber links with lights source and
signal-strength meter test equipment.  

Minimum Qualifications

These qualifications refer to education and/or experience.

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Telecommunications,
low-voltage and fiber optic cabling, network electronics installation and
configuration, or related field.  

Required Qualifications

These qualifications are mandatory in order to perform the functions of the
job (i.e. valid drivers license, certifications.)

-2 years working in telecommunication industry installing and testing all
aspects of standards-based cabling infrastructure and the installation,
configuration, and troubleshooting of LAN/WAN network switches, routers, and
wireless access points.

-Knowledge of EIA/TIA installation standards. Knowledge of NEC and local
installation codes for low voltage and fiber optics structured cabling
systems.

Language Skills:

-Ability of communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

-Ability to effectively present information one-on-one to customers,
clients, and employees.

Mathematical Skills:

-Knowledge and ability to comprehend and work with binary, octal, and
hexadecimal numbers.

-Knowledge and ability to comprehend and work with logarithmic numbers
(decibels).

-Knowledge and ability to comprehend and work with numbers involving
scientific notations.

-Mathematical ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers,
decimals, and fractions.

Reasoning Ability:

-Ability to quickly analyze network operational problems related to
electronic equipment and cabling infrastructure.

-Ability to formulate logical and practical plans for resolving problems in
an efficient and timely manner.

Physical Demands:

-Physical ability and willingness to do heavy lifting and manual labor as
required.

-Ability and willingness to perform overhead work.

-Employee must frequently talk, hear, feel, walk, stand, climb, reach,
stoop, crouch, and kneel.

-Visual acuity often required.

Work Environment:

-Ability and willingness to work in confined spaces as per acceptable
procedures defined by OSHA and DU Risk Management Department.

-Ability to work at heights (use of ladders often required).

-Ability and willingness to work indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work may
require working under inclement weather conditions.

-Must have valid Driver's License and the ability to drive Network Services
vehicles (e.g. Service Van).

Other Skills & Abilities:

-Social Skills: a demonstrated ability to work effectively and productively
with people from all different origins and backgrounds. Employee must be
tolerant, considerate, and even-tempered with others at all times.

-Pleasant telephone demeanor.

-Must be able to work efficiently and productively under pressure and time
constraints.
