The University of Maryland, College Park, Information Technology, seeks a Junior Network Engineer to provide overall support for the network infrastructure with large emphasis on the wireless network.  This may involve creating and supporting system scripts, support of network entities such as Cisco routers and switches, packetshapers, VPN systems, firewalls, IPS systems, load balancers, VoIP gear, wireless devices, and video services. The position will support a very large wireless deployment of 4,500+ access points and 20 controllers while coordinating expansion plans. This position will also involve planning, designing, and implementing network infrastructure projects.   Other duties that may be involved in the fulfillment of this position are managing network resources such as installed fiber and wireless maps, and assisting in the management of the network management system and other support systems.

To be eligible, candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, or related experience.  Candidates must have three (3) years of very large, Cisco based network (WAN/LAN) engineering experience, and significant experience in large scale, mission critical networks (ISP/Internet/eCommerce/ASP/Web hosting). This position requires hands on experience with wireless access points and a strong knowledge of wireless technologies with an emphasis on Cisco wireless access points, controllers and the Cisco wireless management solution - Network Control System (NCS). Candidates must have knowledge in the following technical areas: routing, switching, wireless, multicast, QoS, network management principles, firewalls, VPNs, network security principles, network capacity planning and management. Candidates should also have technical knowledge of current hardware including 4500 and 6500 Cisco series switches (Nexus switches are a plus), network systems, protocols and standards such as Gigabit Ethernet, Power over Ethernet, LAN, WAN, TCP/IP, 802.1x, SIP, H.323, OSPF and BGP. In addition, candidates must have the ability to support a large wireless deployment (4,500+ access points), and be familiar with network management and analysis tools such as probes and network sniffers or similar devices or programs.

Desirable qualifications include demonstrating a good understanding of how DNS, DHCP, and network monitoring via SNMP work. Other desirables include project management skills, and the ability to do the following - integrate disparate systems, identify functions that can be improved by process development and implementation, identify problems in the enterprise network infrastructure and propose solutions, work independently as well as within a team environment and prepare purchase requisitions with executive summaries and backup documentation.  Candidate should be willing to mentor junior personnel within the organization, participate in professional training programs, perform public speaking and present personal ideas in group sessions.


Salary is $68,800 and up, and commensurate with experience. Excellent leave, medical coverage, retirement and tuition-remission benefits.
