According to their twitter feed they have 85% of their root servers back up with the rest in progress.    Also from the feed: "Due to a database-outage, in combination with a software error, we suffered from a faulty root server configuration... (cont.)"

I'm able to reach my machine again.  It did not reboot so definitely was network-related.  I have not received any correspondence from them as of yet.
