If you don't have records before maint or if there is any suspected ambiguity then cables should be traced beforehand and both ends having a test disconnect to validate the cable run is in fact correctly identified.
Also if fibre then checking wwn's match on both ends is a very good clue correct cable run has been identified.
Trusting the label is ok but only if the endpoints confirm what is on the ground so to speak.
Definitely do all of above for Tape San please :)
This issue will become more and more prevalent once assets become older hence needing upgrades.
