[Outages-discussion] [outages] facebook slow

What is one organizations definition of “business critical services” is not applicable to every business. For better or worse Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumbr, Amazon, etc social media services have the ability to generate large numbers of support calls to ISP level networks and even internal helpdesk depending on a business’s own policies if there is a large disruption in services. If you do not want to know about or want to see queries about a particular service then I highly recommend you look into mail filtering through your email client of choice. The SnR on the Outages list is way better than searching Twitter or relying on Downdetector even if you get once a week email flurries about the latest outage of social media services you do not have a business case for wanting to know about.

Forwarding over to -discussion to keep the meta out of the main list.

The official Wiki says this is very much on topic.

https://wiki.outages.org/index.php/Main_Page

"other sorts of things -- telecom problems, Twitter dying again, etc -- are certainly within our scope here as well."

"a lot of our subscribers run 'eyeball' networks, and want to know about outages which will generate lots of end-user calls to their support lines -- therefore, such outages are explicitly on-topic for our lists."

I would encourage everyone to revisit the info page for the outages mailing list found here: https://puck.nether.net/mailman/listinfo/outages

"The purpose of this list is to have a central place to lookup and report so that end users & network operators know why their services (e-mail, phones, etc) went down eliminating the need to open tons of trouble tickets during a major event. One master ticket - such as fiber cut affect xxx OC48's would suffice. We hope this would empower users and network operators to post such events so that everyone could benefit from it. "

The list is for reporting outages on carrier networks and has grown to cloud services (AWS, Azure) as those have expanded. Facebook is not a provider of any meaningful business critical services, and therefore does not fit in this forum.

Facebook is a fairly commonly used service.

Also, it's currently broken and has been so for about an hour.

I don’t see the point of sending this in the outages mailing list.
