[Outages-discussion] Cogent disconnecting Russia

I think this is the wrong step. The Internet is what is allowing me, personally, to differentiate between CNN and RT – I have friends on Facebook and also in Ukraine and I can reach them. If we cut off Russia we prevent their citizens (and ours) from getting much needed data.

Also, creepy how fast one can lose IP space they don’t “own” themselves.

Based on the wording used:

“In light of the unwarranted and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, Cogent is terminating all of your services effective at 5 p.m. GMT on March 4, 2022. The economic sanctions put in place as a result of the invasion and the increasingly uncertain security situation make it impossible for Cogent to continue to provide you with service. All Cogent-provided ports and IP address space will be reclaimed as of the termination date.”

They don't sound very neutral.

If they're going to follow the War Conventions in the Hauge, they should likewise terminate all customer connections to Ukraine as well, if they're considering themselves to be a neutral party.

Of course, that doesn't apply if they're taking a side as a participant in the conflict.

Shamelessly copying from Sean Donelan...
