It is resolved now but as far as I can tell the issue was caused by a DNSSEC validation failure on aaplimg.com. I noticed a lot of DNSSEC BOGUS messages in my local pihole's log for names like proxy.safebrowsing.apple which CNAME to aaplimg.com.
