There's discussion that this outage could have been related to TCAM
(tertiary memory) hardware limitation that affects the number of
routes/prefixes supported as related to the BGP routing table and the
impact on router performance and functionality when it's exceeded.
SUP720-3B still sold today has a 256K IPv4 route limitation. The BGP
routing table is just shy of that not considering other features and
functions that use TCAM memory.
