What you can do is write a perl script that when you email
script at yourdomain.com executes your script.
At that point just write some conditions to see if it is something down
or up and then send the email to the appropriate email address. In my
case I also have flags to turn on/off phone notification as well as
based on what service is down email different people.

Hope that helps.
