I concur.  Certain problems just can't be solved (easily) - this is one 
of them.  Between not being required to receive audio until the 
three-way handshake completes and end-to-end network delay and various 
other state transitions, the safe side is always to ensure at least a >= 
1 sec silence gap after pickup.
