You man have an older IOS that doesn't have 802.1q. I am running Version
12.1(2). Note that "ip route cache" and CEF don't work in most versions on
802.1q including that one.
I defined things the way you propose. Make everything a sub-interface
including the basic one. There are several reconfiguration commands for the
basic interface which require you to remove all the sub-interfaces before they
are allowed and you don't want to run into that. I did :-)
