[nsp] Doing VLANS with HP switch & Cisco Router

I've got an HP procurve switch which is tied into a cisco 2621 router. Up
until now I have not had a need to do any VLANS on this switch but I do
now. My understanding is that I need to use 802.1q and have the routers
ethernet port on a switch port which does trunking for all the vlans.

I've done this but for some reason when I create an ethernet sub-interface
it does not allow me to set an encapsulation type. Is there particular
version of the IOS that I need to do 802.1q encapsulation? Also, when doing
sub-interfaces, should I have the main ethernet interface with no ip on it
and have all vlan ip's on sub-interfaces kinda like frame relay?

Sorry I am kinda a newbie to vlans. Any tips or pointers would be much
appreciated!
