Old Allied Radio

I also have some fond memories about Allied Radio & their catalog. My first
kit was a Span Master receiver. It worked the first time. That was in 1958
or 59. When I got my Novice ticket (WN9CJE) in about 1960 I got a T-60. It
also worked the first time, and still does! I ordered lots of other little
things from the catalog, too, and drooled over the nifty Collins, National,
Hallicrafters, etc. rigs. In the late 60's I went to school in Chicago
(IIT) and finally got the chance to visit 100 N. Western one Saturday with
my roommate, looking for some stereo gear. I don't really remember the
place all that well except that it was huge and very busy. Anyway, I did
manage to visit Mecca once :-).

IIT was (is) also just down the street from another mecca known to car
freaks... J.C. Whitney, which I also visited (much more often then Allied)
but that's another story...
