Cleaning air caps

Will...

I once "...inherited" a bunch of old air variable capacitors that were the
ultimate in "grunge"...I simply placed them into a pot containing a mixture
of boiling water & pure lemon juice, & let things "cook" for a few
minutes...

I was amazed at how clean they became---but brother, they sure needed
lubricating after this "clean up"!!

NOTE: Do NOT boil anything coated with copper therein! They acid in the
lemon juice removes just a trace (copper oxide?) which will then BOND to
ferrous metal parts on anything else you might "cook" in the mixture
thereafter! I did just that when I boiled clean a roller inductor (1/4"
edge wound copper ribbon), then dropped in a vintage Cardwell variable
capacitor---the end frames now have a nice coppery sheen to them! (perhaps
not totally undesirable in all instances!)...
