Paul,
Johnson did put out an outboard SSB generator which could
be/was used with about anything. Also so did Heath (SB-10, I
believe), and so did B&W - maybe others. These were all phasing
type generators and, if adjusted properly and working, did/do
very well. I got an SB-10 working with an Apache, e.g., and had
the B&W 5100 and adapter in another life. They'd get the low
level RF from the exciter (before the final stage), create
a low-level sideband signal with it and feed it back in to the
driver/final of the original. Don't see many of the Johnson
ones around, but the Heath shows up from time to time.
