Taking this further, shaping dome topped LEDs, a little roughing here &
polishing there, partial coating of the domes and other tricks can be
applied to cause the light to do what you want within reason.  With regular
bulbs it takes a bit more in the way of optics and low peasant cunning to
accomplish the same end, and that sometimes depends on the filament
orientation.  Either way it's fun.
