[Boatanchors] trashed package resolution

Every one of the carriers will try to delay you until you get discouraged.
Persistence is the key. The USPS once sent me through dozens of hoops to
get a $500 claim paid but I jumped through all of them and they eventually
did pay up. It took 6 months, but I did get the check. FedEx tried to
stiff me altogether but a short letter to the president of USAA (through
whom I have a FedEx account) lit a fire under them. I conclude that the job
of claims adjuster for the carriers is to deny and, when pressed, delay,
delay, delay. The win for them is that you go away and they don't have to
pay up, and this must happen often enough that the carriers still sell
insurance. Be persistent. Document everything. Take photos. Of course,
YMMV, and I might be just some old ham mouthing off, but I have been around
this block more than once.
73 and happy holidays to everyone,

I ship UPS and FedEx in my business frequently. In general, the packages
arrive intact and on time. We have had several instances where we needed to
file claims. In some of those, the claims were arbitrarily denied. (One
package had been pierced by a forklift, and the adjuster reported that the
box was not damaged. I suggested to them that the adjuster had to leave his
driving job due to failing eyesight!) In all cases, when I complained, the
claim was approved and paid.
The only exception has been the US Postal Service. When a couple of insured
packages were lost, they encouraged me to wait while they searched. By the
time I lost patience and filed, the 30 day limit for filing claims had
passed!

So, my experience is that the two private carriers will try to avoid
liability, but give up the fight fairly easily, but our government agency
intentionally scams the customer on insurance claims. FWIW

Happy thanksgiving, all!

I had a WWII rifle shipped with "adult signature required" specified by
the shipper.

Fed Ex left it on the neighbor two houses north of me, and forged my
signature. My neighbors were on an extended vacation. By the time the
driver found the box, I had already contacted ATF and the local sheriff.
This got Fed Ex's attention finally.

They must put the drivers under huge pressure to hit and run.
