Ah!  Setting encapsulation to hdlc solved that.  I now see:

  Serial0 is up, line protcol is up.

I still can't ping mine or the remote IP (192.168.12.1 and 192.168.12.2)
so I guess something is fishy with the ethernet interface.  I'll see if
I can track it down.
