I have seen the malloc failures on a number of our 3550s running IOS
12.1(13)EA an 12.1(19)EA. The
malloc failures are caused by memory fragmentation in the I/O memory pool. I
have opened a number
of cases with Cisco and they haven't found any associated ddts. The usual
answer is:

 a) Upgrade to latest IOS
 b) Your network is worm infected
 c) You probably have a unstable network topology (STP, OSPF, ...)
