[c-nsp] 28xx and a DS3

Along a similar line of inquiry, does anyone have suggestions on an
affordable way to split a channelized DS3 into Ethernet VLANs?

Thanks Bruce,

Yeah, I have another DS3 that's using T3SUs and Netscreen firewalls. I
have thought of using T3SUs to save a few bucks. It still seems that I
need the same sort of router performance either way, no?

What model routers do you put on either end? Are you running full-rate?
You're not encrypting the traffic, are you?

Thanks for your help,

Chris

What we do here is use any old routers with Fast Ethernet interfaces,
and
terminate the DS3 at both ends with either the Adtran T3SU with the
Ethernet
interface card. The T3SU has good out-of-band Ethernet management, and
if you
get the newer version of the T3SU, it even has a built-in modem for
backup
out-of-band management. The T3SUs are readily available on eBay, though
I
usually end up having to order the Ethernet interface cards from a
distributor.

This solution is MUCH cheaper than a Cisco DS3 interface card, let alone

having to upgrade to a more advanced router.

Let me know if you need more information on exactly what to get.

(You used to be able to do the same thing with the
Net2Net/Paradyne/Zhone
DSE4500, but that product has been discontinued, and didn't have as good

management.)
