WCCP is your friend. Configuring that on IOS is trivial, but 
there are several issues to consider when enabling it on Linux, 
fewer on FreeBSD.

Would recommend looking at http://www.squid-cache.org/ as a 
starting point, as well as Googl'ing transparent/interception 
caching.

Going with FreeBSD might be less painful when setting up WCCP.
