I believe GigE allowed in theory for fibre hubs (not switches). Hence 
the need for half-duplex, and a mechanism to select such. That it was 
never to my knowledge used means it's just an irritating option.

I think the situation is preferable to 100Fx where you could run for 
years with one end in half-duplex and one in full, extremely poor 
throughput, and it not be obvious.
