We actually used bridging for failover on several CentOS 4 servers until
some time ago, lettings the servers participate in the spanning tree.
That's a horrible idea (though it was actually mine back when we did
it!), both because failover times are 3 x FWD delay and since it's a lot
harder to protect the network.

For Linux servers, just use bonding with the modprobe.conf options
"mode=active-backup primary=eth0". I can give a full example if somebody
would want that.
