As previously mentioned , hidden IOS command "service unsupported-transceiver"...it is global, not interface level... and for IOS XR I use, interface level, "transceiver permit pid all"

I use non-cisco xcvrs all over the place in my network, they seem fine.

Also, ASR901 takes the legacy hidden global command.... I had to use it somewhat recently.

Agreed, general use optics shouldn’t cost you more than $300, and that is being quite generous.

If you wanted to program your own optics, apparently you can get one of these new raspberry pis:

It includes a link at the bottom for how to program the optics to be ‘cisco compatible’.
