As long as your exchange box and unity box are on the same LAN, not necessarily the same segment, you should be good. Cisco doesn’t support exchange servers across a WAN link due to the tremendous amount of traffic that travels between exchange and unity.
Hope this helps.

Subject: [cisco-voip] Recommended Physical Placement of Unity Server
We have two physical locations for our VoIP hardware and our data hardware. We're about to install Unity, but was not quite sure where I should place the physical server. Should I place it in our VoIP room where the CallManagers are located or in our data room where our Exchange servers are located? Please advise on what you recommend and why. Thanks.
