Martin,
If the minicom's are tty devices, then you'll probably want to make
sure you have fax pass-through configured appropriately on the gateway
- I believe the ATA is set to perform pass-through out of the box.
What sort of gateway(s) are you using? Have you tried an
(minicom)ATA->ATA(minicom) call? That would 'prove' the ATA config.

I'm not sure what speed TTY devices connect at, but you may want to
cap it at 14.4K or even 9600.
