[cisco-voip] Transcoder config

I have a CCM 4.1.3 install on my lan/wan.  All wan site are configured in 
the CCM as g729 codecs.
I am wondering what use is the transcoder config in the call manager for? 
Also, where is the transcoding taking place
on the CM when there are 711 and 729 phones?  Is there a limitation where I 
need to look at a hardware transcoder?
What is the typicla situations where a hw transcoder is needed?
